Volleyball Splits Matches on Senior Day

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Volleyball team battled hard on Senior day Saturday taking the #1 team in the conference, Southern Virginia to a decisive fifth set before falling while also dominating Mary Baldwin University from Everett Gym.

NCWC 3, MBU 0

The Bishops cruised to a 3-set win over Mary Baldwin (5-21, 1-13) in their second match of the day easily taking the first set 25-16 behind 16 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Wesleyan then pounded the Squirrels 25-13 in the second set on 12 kills hitting .364. Finally, in the third set the Bishops were able to pick up the win 25-17 on 11 kills.

Senior outside hitter Michaela Seawell led the Bishops as she had a terrific day with 11 kills and 0 errors to hit .579 with 4 digs and a block. Fellow senior outside Bijou Patel also played well tallying 7 kills and 2 digs while senior middle Lauren Weaver posted 8 kills with 2 digs, 3 blocks and an assist.

Another senior middle, Sydney Barnwell also led the team with 3 aces along with 4 kills, 3 digs, and 3 blocks while senior setter Makayla Jordan set a career-high with 20 assists, 3 kills, and 3 digs. Senior DS Mary Catherine Davis registered a team-best 10 digs defensively while fellow senior DS Marisa Corcoran tallied seven digs with 3 aces and a kill. Junior DS Andrea Vendrame also had 3 aces and 3 digs while junior libero Kira Kristjanson had 8 digs as well.

SVU 3, NCWC 2

In the first match of the day, The Bishops put up a valiant effort as they split the first four sets forcing the top team into a deciding fifth but Wesleyan came up short as the Knights took it 15-6. 

SVU (22-4, 13-2) won the first set 25-18 behind 18 kills hitting .389 before NCWC squeaked out a second set win 25-22 on 11 kills. SVU then fought back to take the third set 25-21 before the Bishops held on to take the fourth set 25-23 on 15 kills.

Seawell again led the Bishops with 14 kills and a season-high of 23 digs  and 2 aces while hitting .306. Junior outside hitter Aubrey Nicholson also tallied 10 kills and 10 digs for a double-double of her own as well to go along with 3 aces and an assist. Weaver then added 10 kills and 3 blocks in the middle while fellow middle, Barnwell, recorded 8 kills, 3 blocks, 3 aces, and 3 digs.

Kristjanson and Davis then combined for 26 digs while sophomore setter Sloan Martin totaled 43 assists, 6 digs, 2 aces, and 2 kills in the tough loss.

Wesleyan goes to 8-7 in the conference with the split while going to 17-11 overall, thier most wins in a season since 2012 when they won 21 games. The Bishops will now finish out their home schedule by hosting Pfeiffer on Tuesday at 7 PM.
