Tennis Opens Fall Season at CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Men's Tennis team opened their fall season over the weekend as they took part in the CNU Invitational in Newport News, VA.

Leading the men were the doubles pairing of juniors Aditya Iyer and Roberto Puig as they won the men's doubles title in the top Flight over sophomore teammates Jhonny Acosta and Juan Vallejo 8-5 in the finals. Both pairs of teams won two matches apiece to qualify for the Flight A finals. They beat Div. 1 teams such as Norfolk St., Hampton, and Delaware.

Iyer and Puig also won individual matches in the Flight A singles bracket as well with Puig beating a Delaware player and Iyer upending a CNU athlete.

Vallejo and Acosta each won their quarterfinal matches in the Flight B Singles bracket before Acosta also won his second straight-set match in the semis to advance to the finals of Flight B.

In the Flight C singles, sophomore Nikita Revin won his first two bouts in straight sets to advance to the finals as well against a Norfolk St. player. No finals results were posted as of yet for either flight.

Finally, in the Flight D bracket, sophomore Thomas Trotta and senior Ingmar Remmerswaal each won quarterfinal bouts before falling in the semfinals.

The men will next be in action from Sept. 20-22 at the ITA Southeast Regionals in Rome, Ga.
