Lacrosse Drops Home Match vs. Averett

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's lacrosse team fell 18-4 at home to conference foe Averett University on Wednesday from Scalf Field.

 The Lady Cougars got out to a fast start scoring six goals in the first 8 minutes of action before leading 7-0 at the ene of one quarter. AU then added four more in the second to take an 11-0 lead into the halftime break.

Wesleyan then fought back some scoring two goals by sophomore midfielder Blaire Harley in the first few minutes of the third quarter, but Averett would add four more and lead 15-2 going into the fourth. Senior midfielder Madeline Graham then scored off an assist from senior defender AJ Upchurch to lead off the fourth quarter while Harley followed a few minutes later for the Bishops' fourth goal and her third of the game.

AU would, unfortunately, tack on three more goals off reserve goalie Makiyah Owens in the fourth to take the win. Sophomore goalie Devin Bautz finished making 7 saves on 22 shots while Harley and senior defender Emily Sullivan each picked up three ground balls and forced an AU turnover. Graham and Harley also each won two draw controls apiece. 

The Bishops fall to 4-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference while Averett improves to 8-3 overall and 6-1 in the league.

Wesleyan will next host their final two matches at home this weekend by first debuting at the new Don Stallings Turf Field at Vernon T. Bradley, Jr. Stadium on Saturday at 11:30 AM to take on Brevard College. They will then host Piedmont University on Sunday at 2:00 PM.
