Lacrosse Excited For Upcoming 2023 Campaign

Rocky Mount, NC - The North Carolina Wesleyan University Women's Lacrosse Program is excited about the outlook for the 2023 season. First year head coach Evan Merrill is looking to continue building a high level program, and improving their competitiveness in USA South Conference action.

As anyone in and around the NCWU Women's Lacrosse will tell you, the program's progression is already underway, and it is beginning to show in measurable ways. In a stretch in the middle of the 2022 season, the lacrosse program rallied off 4 wins in a row, and averaged about 14 goals per match during that stretch.Three of those games were against conference opponents, with the biggest being a double overtime thriller against Huntington.

This season, The Bishops return their leading scorer last season in Blaire Harley. The senior midfielder scored 45 goals last season, finishing as the 7th best goal scorer in the conference. Harley was also very accurate in her 2022 campaign; she had 79 shots on goal and made nearly half of them.

Wesleyan will look to a plethora of newcomers this year to support Harley, bringing in 7 freshmen who will gain valuable experience, and be asked to immediately take on a big role for the program.

Coach Even Merrill is excited for the outlook of the 2023 season and the direction the program is headed, commenting, "I am very excited for our team to get to work this spring. We have a lot of new faces that will be able to make an immediate impact for our program, and a good group of returning players that have elevated their game over the last year. For the Women's Lacrosse program, the goal is to take steps forward every day and to ultimately be playing meaningful games in April and May."

The 2023 lacrosse campaign will get going on Saturday, February 25th when the ladies host Averett.
