Bishops Pound D'Youville for Third-Place Win in Brooklyn

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team rolled to a 100-70 win over D'Youville College (NY) in the consolation game of the Medgar Evers' DeCosta Classic in Brooklyn on Sunday to claim third place.

Senior forward A.J. Frye led the Bishops with a team and season-high of 32 points on the day along with 8 rebounds, 7 assists and a block in the win as he flirted with a triple-double. He was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts as well which included averaging 27 points for the tournament. Fellow senior Mitch Layton also set a career high with 20 rebounds along with his 8 points in the victory.

Wesleyan shot 60 percent in the first half en route to a 51-32 lead as Frye scored 20 of his 32 points in the half while junior guard Damon McDowell scored all of his 16 points in the half as well. McDowell also added 10 rebounds along with 2 assists and a team-best 3 steals picking up his first double-double.

The Bishops then shot nearly 48 percent in the second half as they also outscored the Spartans of Buffalo 49-38 in the half on the way to a 30-point win improving to 5-5 on the season.

Junior guard Josh Covington recorded a double-double in the win as well scoring 10 points to go along with dishing out a season and career-high of 13 assists. Senior guard Cameron Martin also finished in double-figure scoring putting up a season-high of 15 points with 3 assists while fellow senior, forward Rico Bullock also tallied 11 points with 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and a block as Wesleyan shot 53 percent for the game and held DYC (1-10) to just 6 threes.

The Bishops, back at .500 at 5-5, return to action next Saturday when they head to Georgia to battle Piedmont College in conference play on Jan. 4 at 2:00 PM.
