BREVARD, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College men's basketball team fell 83-79 on the road to conference foe Brevard College on Sunday afternoon.
Wesleyan got off to a great a start leading 10-0 just four minutes into the game. However, Brevard would slowly crawl back into the game going on a 19-7 run to lead by two just 11 minutes into the game.
The game would remain competitive for the rest of the first half with the teams staying right with each other shooting over 40 percent while the difference came at the three-point line as Brevard made six more threes than the Bishops to take a 39-37 halftime edge.
Each team would increase their shooting percentages in the second half as well with Wesleyan making over 59 percent of their shots while BC shot 56 percent. However, Wesleyan missed all of their three-point attempts in the second half as Brevard made 5 of theirs leading to the win. BC closed the game on a 6-0 run after two free throws from junior guard Josh Covington gave Wesleyan the lead at 79-77 with 1:17 to play. He finished with 7 points and a steal off the bench.
Wesleyan was led by senior center A.J. Frye's 19 points and 5 rebounds while fellow senior, forward Mitch Layton also posted a season-high of 16 points with 6 rebounds and one steal.
Junior guard Damon McDowell also finished in double-figure scoring for Wesleyan with his 13 points. He also added 2 boards, one assist, a steal and a block while sophomore forward Isaiah Lewis also socred 8 points with 6 rebounds off the bench. Senior forward Rico Bullock also played well posting 6 points and 4 rebounds with a team-high 3 assists, a steal and a block. Senior guard Cameron Martin also had 3 assists and 5 rebounds, but shot just 1 of 7 from deep totaling just 5 points on the day.
Wesleyan falls to 5-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the weekend losses while Brevard improves to 3-9 and 2-3 in the conference.
The Bishops will now return home to host Greensboro College (8-4) at 7:30 on Wednesday night in East Division play.
