Rocky Mount, N.C. - Sophomore Rebecca Staylor led her North Carolina Wesleyan women's soccer team to its first win of the 2012 season on Sunday, netting the golden goal in the Bishops' 2-1 overtime victory versus Spelman College at Scalf Field. Staylor, who also assisted on Wesleyan's first goal, beat two defenders to get off the game-winning shot in the 95th minute.
Wesleyan had taken a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a crafty goal by freshman Sarah Olsowski at the 21:46 mark. Olsowski collected a Staylor cross from the right side and beat Spelman keeper Kenya McQueen to her left for the score. The Jaguars later knotted the score in the 57th minute on a penalty kick.
NCWC freshman goalie Vanessa Batchelor made six saves over the final 49:41 to secure her first collegiate win. Fellow Freshman Haley Hopkins made two saves in the first half.
The Bishops had previously dropped their season opener at Salem College by a 4-1 score on Saturday. Freshman Nicole Liette tallied Wesleyan's lone score with an unassisted goal in the 59th minute.
Now 1-1 on the season, NCWC returns to action at Randolph-Macon on Friday. The match is slated for a 4:30pm start.
