Burkhart Nets Golden Goal in Battling Bishop Debut

Greensboro, N.C. - Sophomore transfer Ella Burkhart made the most of her Battling Bishop debut on Tuesday night, netting a season-opening Golden Goal in double overtime at Guilford College.

After fighting to a scoreless draw during regulation, the Bishops and Quakers headed to overtime with Wesleyan holding a 12-7 lead in shots. Each team managed one shot in the first OT, and NCWC proceeded to get off the first shot of the second.

With time running down, the match seemed destined to end in a tie with neither team able to tally a score. In the 108th minute, however, sophomore Hannah Tolson picked off a Quaker throw-in and laid the ball off for Burkhart. Burhart took one touch and turned for a shot from 30 yards that made its way just over the out-stretched arm of GC keeper Maggie Albert.

The score ended a match that saw Wesleyan create several scoring opportunities. The Bishops, in fact, out-shot the Quakers 15-8 and racked up 11 shots-on-goal. Albert teamed with Becca Banks for ten saves on the night, while NCWC senior Vanessa Batchelor made four stops en route to the win.

Wesleyan continues play with its home opener on Saturday. The Bishops will welcome Randolph-Macon College to Scalf Field for a 4:00pm tilt.
