Women’s Soccer picks up first win of the season

ARLINGTON, Va. – The NC Wesleyan College women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Saturday as they topped non-conference opponent Eastern Mennonite University (Va.) 3-1 in a neutral site game in Arlington, Va.

The Lady Bishops got on the board first as sophomore forward Cydney Nichols scored unassisted just five minutes into the game.

However, the Lady Royals (1-1) would tie the game in the 25th minute as their shot deflected off Wesleyan sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Jacobs and into the top of the net. Wesleyan still led in shots 7-4 at the intermission.

The Battling Bishops would then come back with two second half goals in a span of four minutes. The first goal of the half came in the 51st minute as junior forward Sarah Cook scored off an assist from Nichols. Junior defender Victoria Burkhart would then tally the second goal of the half and final goal of the game for either team scoring just four minutes later unassisted off a free kick from 20 yards out to put NCWC up 3-1.

The Bishops would control the shots as well outshooting the Royals 6-2 for the half and go on for the win. Jacobs would go on to make four saves on five shots on goal in 90 minutes while senior forward Madeline Williams led in total shots with three.

Wesleyan's season opener on Friday night vs. Chatham University (Pa.) was postponed due to lightning and will most likely not be made up this season.

NCWC (1-0) will now return home to host former USA South rival Ferrum College (Va.) (1-0) on Tuesday at 5:30 PM at Scalf Field.
