Lady Bishops Advance on PKs 5-3

RALEIGH, N.C. - The 6th seeded NC Wesleyan College women's soccer team played brilliantly Wednesday night as they knocked off third seed Meredith College 5-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a scoreless draw in regulation and overtime.

The first round shootout win will now advance the Bishops into a USA South Tournament Quarterfinal matchup with West #2 seed Covenant College (9-5-2) on the road Saturday afternoon in North Georgia at 2 PM.

After a scoreless 90 minutes which saw the Lady Bishops outshoot the Angels 12-8 and 8-3 in the second half, the Bishops then proceeded to dominate the first overtime with a 6-0 shot advantage while the second OT was tighter in shots.

Wesleyan then went first in the PK shootout with senior Sarah Cook knocking it home while Meredith missed their opening kick leaving the door open for the Bishops. Freshman Madison Sullivan and sophomore Kailey Munro then proceeded to successfully make their kicks to give the Bishops a 3-2 lead. Juniors Naniiya Brown and Cydney Nichols then delivered the win with their successful kicks as well pushing the Bishops into the final 8.

Cook led the Bishops in shots with six and five on goal while junior goalkeeper Alicia Jacobs would make 6 saves on 6 shots on goal for the shutout. 

The match is counted as an official tie as Wesleyan now enters their quarterfinal game with a mark of 6-10-1 while Meredith finishes their campaign 6-11-1.
