Greensboro, N.C. - The Blue & Gold football team of North Carolina Wesleyan returned to the win column on Saturday with a 31-19 league victory over Greensboro on the road. With the win, the Bishops are now 2-4 overall, 2-1 in USA South play.
The Pride (0-6, 0-3 USAS) jumped out to a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter on a Scott Warren 2-yard run. NCWC's Kevin Quicker and GC's Joe Langmeyer proceeded to trade 41- and 27-yard field goals before Wesleyan quarterback Shane Paris hit sophomore wideout Greg Edwards with a 67-yard scoring strike to cap the first quarter scoring.
Edwards hauled in a second TD from Paris in the second quarter, this time from 10 yards out to give Wesleyan a 17-10 lead. Langmeyer nailed a 33-yarder as time expired for a 17-13 Bishop advantage at the half.
In the third quarter, Bishop tailback Jacques Alston provided the only scoring with a 39-yard touchdown run. The Pride then made things interested in the fourth quarter when Ryan Throndset found Joey Porter from four yards out, but GC failed on the 2-point conversion. NCWC's Jamal Smith later sealed the victory with a 10-yard scoring run inside of two minutes for the 31-19 final.
Paris finished 15-of-22 for 159 yards and two touchdowns, while Alston and Smith combined for 165 yards on the ground. Edwards had 106 receiving yards and the pair of scores.
Defensively, Tazmon Foster and Sam Smith each recorded eight tackles with two of Foster's coming on sacks. Adrian White also added a pair of sacks and Javon Boddie an interception.
Wesleyan travels to Christopher Newport next Saturday for a 7:00 p.m. match-up with the Captains.
