Bishops Cruise Past Pride on Homecoming

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Football team cruised to a 44-7 Homecoming win over Greensboro College on a beautiful Saturday in the first-ever football game played on campus at the Vernon T. Bradley Complex in front of a huge crowd.

Wesleyan scored 37 points in the first half on 5 touchdowns as they raced out to a 30-0 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. Wesleyan would then add a third quarter touchdown before running out the clock for the win improving to 3-2 overall for the year and 2-0 in the USA South. Greensboro falls to 1-4.

Wesleyan got on the board first as they turned a fumble into a combined 45-yard punt return by Kevin Alford and Mar'Cris Jackson to lead 7-0 early. The Bishops would then complete a 3-play 66-yard drive with an 18-yard TD pass from senior QB Donielle Totten to freshman RB Sensier Carnes to take a 14-0 lead. That score was set up by a Darian Curley 44-yard rush.

Wesleyan would take a 17-0 lead into the second quarter after an Eddie Graham field goal before the Bishops would drive 73 yards on 12 plays to make it 23-0 on a 12-yard TD pass from Totten to sophomore WR Tyler Roberts. Graham then intercepted a Greensboro pass and returned it 40 yards for a score making it 30-0. After a GC touchdown, Wesleyan would then end the half on a 49 yard TD pass from Totten to WR Jai Irvin to make it 37-7 at the break.

Wesleyan would add one more score in the second half as junior RB Jeff Black scored from 3 yards out to complete a 70 yard drive. Wesleyan outgained the Pride 368-144 on the day led by 116 total yards from Curley and 144 through the air from Totten.

Defensively, senior middle linebacker Antonio Johnson led the Bishops with 7 tackles while senior nose tackle Jeffery Person added 2 sacks. Senior Defensive End R.J. Smalls also played well as he made a sack along with 3 tackles for loss while Graham recorded two interceptions, 1 pass breakup and a tackle for loss as a CB before also adding 5 extra points as the kicker as well. Sophomore linebacker William Riggins also added an interception as well.

The Bishops return to action next Saturday when they go on the road to face rival Averett (Va.) at 6:00 PM in Danville.
