ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Football team shut out Maryville College 23-0 on Senior Day Saturday. The game was played at their on-campus home at the Vernon T. Bradley Complex and the win clinched a winning record for the season. The Bishops also remained undefeated at the Bradley Complex at 2-0.
The Bishops, though, will finish the year 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference and in a tie for 2nd. They will fall just one game back of Conference Champ Huntingdon, who finished 6-1.
Wesleyan closed the season with 3 consecutive wins over Methodist, Huntingdon, and Maryville and now has their most wins in a season since the 2010 team won 7.
Wesleyan began the game with a 7 play 55-yard drive ending with the first of three Eddie Graham field goals. Wesleyan then made it 10-0 in the second quarter with a 49 yard fumble return touchdown from senior DB Marcus Leggett.
Wesleyan would then take advantage of a bad snap on a punt by the Scots (3-7, 3-4 USA South) and take over at MC's 25 yard line and eventually use the second Graham field goal to make it 13-0 midway through the 2nd quarter.
Graham would then switch from his kicking duties back to his DB duties and immediately intercept the MC QB at his own 48 and return it 40 yards inside the MC 5. However, he then hit the cross bar on his 37-yard FG attempt as the offense stalled inside the five.
The Bishops would score their final touchdown of the day with a 67-yard pass from senior QB Donielle Totten to sophomore WR Tyler Roberts, who out-raced the defender for the score and a 20-0 NCWC lead. Wesleyan would then add the final points of the game and the half with another 35 yard FG from Graham to make it 23-0 at halftime. Graham's three field goals are tied for the most successful FG in a game in school history while his 7 made FGs this season are 4th all-time.
Wesleyan outgained the Scots 221-166 on the day and 171-20 in the passing game while Roberts led the offense with 101 yards receiving and his TD while fellow sophomore wideout, Jai Irvin also caught 3 balls for 70 yards.
Defensively, senior middle linebacker Isaiah Williams led the Bishops with 10 tackles and a sack and 1.5 TFL while junior LB TaBronze Carr registered 5 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered one. Senior D-Linemen R.J. Smalls and Jeff Person also combined for 15 tackles and 3 TFL while fellow senior, MLB Antonio Johnson finished his Bishop career with 7 tackles as well. Johnson will finish 2nd in school history with over 260 tackles and led the team with 117 this season, which is 2nd most in a season in NCWC history.
