Football's Johnson Named Male Athlete of the Year

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Athletic Department has announced their 2020 Male Athlete of the Year and this year that honor goes to senior linebacker Antonio Johnson of the Bishop Football team.

Johnson was named as the USA South Player of the Year and to the All-Conference First Team for the second consecutive season. He was also named a First Team All-Region Selection as well and won the conference's Defensive Player of the Week award four times this season.

Johnson, a native of Beaufort, NC, was also named a Second Team All-American by D3football.com back in December. This was the linebacker's second all-American honor of the year as he was also named a Second Team Defensive All-American by the CFB network earlier in December.

Johnson led the nation in solo tackles with 76 and led the conference in total Tackles with 117 as well as forcing 3 fumbles along with 2 interceptions, 2 touchdowns, and 4.5 sacks this season helping to lead the Bishops to a 6-4 record and 2nd place finish in the USA South at 5-2. He helped the Bishops defeat eventual Conference Champ Huntingdon College earlier in the season as well with a stellar team defensive effort.

Johnson, a team captain, also broke 2 school career records with five total defensive touchdowns and most forced fumbles in his career.

Antonio was also a Business Administration major with a cumulative GPA of 3.34 and a last semester GPA of 3.7. He was named to the President's List multiple times and was named an Academic All-Conference athlete as well.

Finally, Johnson is an Army Reserve Specialist and volunteers at his local church's soup kitchen in Morehead City, NC while also coaching youth basketball there.
