Football's Dwayne Hollis Named Decade's Special Teams Player of the Week

In the absence of competition in the fall semester and its postponement to the spring semester, the USA South Athletic Conference will continue selecting athletes of the week. The selections, however, will not be based on current competition but instead the nominees will be those who earned an athlete of the week honor in a particular category within the current week over the past decade. Football Special Teams Player of the Week



Dwayne Hollis, N.C. Wesleyan (October 22, 2012) - The Newport News, Virginia defensive back/kick returner took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards for a touchdown, sparking a 39-point third quarter for the Bishops in a 45-23 win over USA South rival Greensboro. On defense, Hollis collected six total tackles and two interceptions, one of which he returned for a 40-yard touchdown.

Hollis went on to play in the Arena League for three years from 2015-17 and the AAF in 2019 after playing for the Battling Bishops from 2009 to 2012 under Head Coach Mark Henninger and helped the Bishops to 20 wins. As a sophomore, Hollis was named First Team All-USA South Athletic Conference as a Defensive Back. As a junior and senior, Hollis was named First Team All-USA South Athletic Conference as both a kick returner and as a defensive back. Hollis was also named an All-American at defensive back by the American Football Coaches Association.

Hollis has also played for the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League from 2015-2017 as a kick returner and defensive back. While there, he helped lead the Soul to back-to-back Arena Bowl Championships and was also named an AFL Defensive Back of the Year in 2017.
