Brevard Powers Past Bishop Football

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College football program hosted their third straight home game to start the season on Saturday, but unfortunately fell 32-7 to Brevard College (N.C.) in their USA South opener.

The Bishops got off to a good start stopping Breavrd on fourth and goal from the 1 to get a goal-line stand in the first quarter, but unfortunately then gave up a safety on the next play to go down 2-0 early.

Wesleyan then allowed just two field goals in the second quarter until BC added a big 52 yard touchdown run before halftime to make it 15-0. BC scored the touchdown after a penalty on NCWC gave the Tornados the ball back at midfield.

Brevard then continued the scoring early in the third quarter with a 31-yard TD pass to go up 22-0. The Bishops, though, would come back with a 8-play 62-yard drive punctuated by a 44-yard run from senior RB Jeff Black. Then, on 4th and goal, senior WR Zane Moser then took a one yard pass from soph. QB Storm Yarbrough to finish off the four-minute drive with his first career touchdown.

Brevard (1-2, 1-0) then scored a touchdown early in the 4th to put the game out of reach.

Wesleyan totaled 21 first downs and 219 yards of total offense led by Yarbrough throwing for 133 yards and a TD while Black ran for 77 yards on 16 carries and caught 2 balls for 16 yards for 93 yards of total offense.  Soph. WR Sean Washington then led the wideouts with 10 receptions on 46 yards while senior WR Kevin Alford also registered 44 yards.

Defensively, sophomore safety Benyon Williams led the charge with 8 total tackles, a pass breakup, and a tackle and a half for loss while fellow junior DB RJ Carter also had 8 tackles. Sophomore Linebacker Tim Willis added 7 tackles while fellow sophomore linebacker Deante Lucenti registered 4 tackles, a sack, and 2 tackles for loss.

The Bishops fall to 0-3 on the year and will next head out on the road for their first away game of 2021 when they go to Georgia to battle LaGrange College next Saturday at 1:00.
