Football Drops Season Finale to Methodist

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College football team fell 38-7 on the road at Methodist University on Saturday evening in their season finale.

With the loss, the Bishops finish 4-4 in the USA South Conference and in a tie for 4th place while finishing 4-6 overall.

After MU got on the board first in the first quarter with a 50-yard Touchdown pass, the Bishops came right back in the second quarter to tie the game with a 33-yard TD run from freshman RB Trevon Crank that completed a 6-play 80-yard drive. 

Methodist (7-2), however, would then add another touchdown and field goal late in the second quarter to go into the break up 17-7.

MU then thew a 70-yard TD pass in the third quarter to increase their lead to 17 points before adding two rushing touchdowns in the fourth for the win to finish in 2nd place in the conference.

Wesleyan totaled 413 yards of offense and 19 first downs while rushing for 295 yards on the ground led by junior RB Anthony Byrd's career-high of 189 yards on 8.6 yards per carry. Crank also rushed for 86 yards on just 8 carries and a touchdown.

The freshman QB tandem of Chaz Hirschman and Zachary Marquis also combined to throw for 118 yards on 7 completions led by senior WR Trey Blackwell's 3 catches for 43 yards. Senior WR Kevin Alford also caught two balls for 25 yards and totaled 140 yards in kick returns including a long of 55 yards in his final game.

Defensively, Korey Hunter made 5 tackles and returned an interception for 21 yards while junior safety RJ Carter led the team with 7 solo tackles and 12 overall. Sophomore CB Benyon Williams also made 7 tackles while linebackers Charles Sias and Nick Burns combined for 7 tackles and 2 TFLs. Junior nose tackle Noah Roberson also forced a fumble and made 4 tackles.
