The Battling Bishops dropped their season opener on the road in Ashland, VA, against a Randolph Macon squad coming off a strong 9-1 2021 campaign. The Bishops moved the ball through the first quarter but were not able to convert those drives to points.
NCWU's Chaz Hirshman and the Bishop offense changed that with Wesleyan's first drive of the third quarter. The 10 play, 73 yard drive included five passes to four different receivers including two to Sean Washington for 24 yards. Washington led the Bishops with eight receptions for 113 yards. Last year's USA South Rookie of the Year Trevon Crank punched in for the score. Converted quarterback Storm Yarborough caught five passes for 66 yards while Kalab Logan caught six passes for 42 yards. Hirshman finished the day 21-33 for 182 yards while Junior Devon Brooks made his QB debut with the Bishops and was 6-7 for 55 yards.
The defense was led by Korey Hunter's nine stops (six solo) and junior Benyon Williams added six stops with an assist on a tackle for loss. Jaden Spruill, Derrick Mosley, Charles Sias and Eric Cooper also contributed on tackles for loss. The Bishops continue on the road with a context next week at Shanandoah with kickoff set for 7pm. Wesleyan's home slate, and first game in the new Vernon T Bradley, Jr. Stadium, will be on September 17 versus Bridgewater.
