NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College Women's basketball team dropped their season opener 95-78 on the road at a tough opponent in Christopher Newport University (Va.) Wednesday night.

The Bishops stayed right with CNU in the first quarter as each team traded shots with the Lady Captains taking a slim 27-24 lead into the second quarter. Wesleyan shot 54 percent in the opening frame.

Unfortunately, CNU came back in the second quarter with shut down defense while the Bishops struggled to shoot the ball as CNU would  go on to lead 54-30 at the break.

A tight third quarter then saw the Bishops fall just 21-19 in the frame as CNU stayed consistent shooting 47 percent. The Bishops then found their stroke in the fourth putting up 29 points outscoring the Captains 29-20 in the quarter on 35 percent shooting and 84 percent from the free-throw line. Wesleyan outpaced CNU in the second half 48-41, but it was not enough to overcome their second quarter struggles as they fell in the end by 17.

Wesleyan shot nearly 35 percent for the game and 77 percent from the free throw line as junior forward Myrayna Watkins finished with a team-high 18 points on 6 of 7 shooting along with 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Fellow forward, Kneciya Tripp also recorded a team-high 15 rebounds with 9 points while junior guard Cydney Nichols added 13 points off the bench.

Freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison also played well tallying 14 points and 9 rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench as well. Fellow  Freshman, Myesha Best also finished in double-figures with 10 points.

CNU improves to 2-1 while the Bishops at 0-1 will next head to Roanoke College for the Jean Beamer Classic to face neutral site foe, Centre College (Ky.) on Saturday at 8:00 PM.
