Women's Basketball Knocks off Centre for first Win

ROANOKE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the young season on Saturday by defeating Centre College (Ky.) 81-60 at the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic in Roanoke on Saturday night.

The Bishops (1-1) will now advance to the finals of the Classic to battle Roanoke College on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM.

Junior Guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops with 22 points while going 4 of 8 from three-point range as Wesleyan got out to a strong first half lead. They scored 23 points in each quarter to take a 46-22 halftime lead on 59 percent shooting.

Wesleyan then outscored Centre 22-19 in the third to go on for the 21-point win shooting 50 percent overall for the game and 47 percent from three. Junior forward Myrayna Watkins also played well scoring 8 points with 7 rebounds while senior guard Jermaiyah Baker finished in double-figure scoring with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting. Baker also added 6 rebounds and 2 assists with a steal.

Junior Guard Cydney Nichols also finished in double digits with 13 points shooting 6 of 7 from the field along with 3 assists while freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison was the final Bishop to score in double digits finishing with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Wesleyan also out-rebounded the Colonels 38-30 on the night.
