Bishop Women Win Roanoke Classic Title

ROANOKE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team dominated the fourth quarter with host Roanoke College 22-8 as they would go on to defeat the Maroons 78-63 on Sunday afternoon to win the Jean Beamer Tip-Off Classic Title.

The Bishops improve to 2-1 on the season with the wins over the weekend, outscoring their foes 159-123.

Wesleyan was led by Tournament MVP junior guard Kayla Johnson's 21 points on 5 of 7 shooting from three-point range as she also added 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

After a 15-all tie in the first quarter, the Bishops came out strong in the second scoring 24 points to take a 39-34 halftime lead.

Roanoke would cut the Bishops lead down to one with a 21-17 third quarter run before Wesleyan ramped up the intensity in the fourth shooting 53 percent while holding RC to just 21 percent shooting and go on for the 15-point win.

The Bishops shot 42 percent overall for the game and a quality 41 percent from three while also going 74 percent from the stripe. Junior forward Myrayna Watkins posted her first double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the win while fellow forward, freshman Kayrisma Harrison totaled 13 points with 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Harrison has now posted double figures in points in each game this season.

Senior guard Jermaiyah Baker , who was also named to the All-Tournament team with Johnson, also finished in double-figure points scoring 11 along with 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a team-best 3 steals. Fellow guard, junior Keorra Taylor then led the team with 6 assists along with 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals.

The Bishops will return to action next Saturday when they host the Jean Edge Classic on Saturday and Sunday. They will first host St. Mary's (MD) at 7:30 Saturday followed by Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 4:00. Please come out and support the women.
