Bishops Trample St. Mary's in Jean Edge Classic

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to a game one win in the Jean Edge Classic on Saturday evening defeating St. Mary's College (MD) 96-60 in their home opener. The win was the Bishops' third straight victory.

The Bishops ran out to a 24-15 lead after the first quarter before putting up 31 points in the 2nd frame to take a 55-29 halftime lead. Wesleyan shot an impressive 56 percent in the first half and 41 percent from three en route to the lead.

The teams then traded points in the third as each scored 18 apiece with the Bishops taking a 73-47 lead into the fourth where they proceeded to play good defense in holding the Seahawks to just 13 points while outscoring them by 10 to go on for the 36-point win and improve to 3-1 on the year. 

Junior guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops with 17 points with three 3-pointers along with 4 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. She led a quintet of double-digit scorers for the Bishops on the night.

Freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison played well scoring 15 points with 7 rebounds while junior guard Cydney Nichols finished with 12 points, 3 assists and a block. Junior forward Myrayna Watkins also scored 11 with 7 rebounds and 3 steals. Junior Forward Kneciya Tripp was the final Bishop to finish in double-figures scoring 10 points with 7 rebounds.

Junior guard Keorra Taylor also added 6 points with 5 assists and 3 steals while fellow guard, freshman Nyesha Best, finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists and a team-high 4 steals. Senior shooting guard Leah Wright also went 3 of 4 from behind-the-arc for 9 points.

Wesleyan will finish off the Classic on Sunday afternoon when they host 1-4 VA Wesleyan at 4:00 PM. VWU is coming off a 63-49 loss to Averett in game one of the Jean Edge Classic earlier Saturday.
