WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team cruised past Salem College 80-59 in their conference opener on the road Wednesday night.
The women improve to 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in conference play while dropping Salem to 0-6.
The Bishops used a big second quarter run to take command of the game. After leading by just four heading into the second at 20-16, the Bishops went on a 20-7 stretch to take a 40-23 halftime edge on 36 percent shooting.
Wesleyan would only outscore the Lady Spirits 40-36 in the second half, but shot 50 percent in the 4th quarter to put the game away. Wesleyan shot 38.5 percent for the game and made 12 more baskets than Salem leading to the win.
Freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison led the Bishops with her double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds along with 2 steals and a block. Fellow forward, junior Myrayna Watkins then added 14 points and 4 rebounds while point guard Keorra Taylor led the team with 7 assists and 5 steals along with scoring 11 points.
Junior forward Kneciya Tripp also led the team with 12 rebounds including six on the offensive glass while junior guard Kayla Johnson added 12 points with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.
Guards Cydney Nichols and Jermaiyah Baker also posted 8 points apiece in the win.
Wesleyan will next have 9 days off before returning home to host conference rival Methodist on December 14 at 2:00 PM.
