Bishop Women Pull Away late from Averett in Win

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team pulled away from conference rival Averett University (Va.) in the second half on Wednesday night en route to a 77-63 victory in Danville.

The Bishops outscored the Cougars 44-30 in the second half after a 33-all tie at halftime. Wesleyan shot 41 percent for the game while holding Averett to just 34 percent shooting in the win. Averett shot just 24 percent from three-point range while the Bishops shot 32 percent led by leading scorer for the night, junior guard Cydney Nichols.

Nichols scored a season-high 20 points off the bench in the win going 6 of 12 from the floor along with 3 rebounds and 3 steals. Fellow junior guard, Kayla Johnson, also had a good night tallying 16 points with 4 rebounds.

Freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison finished in double-figures as well posting 10 points with a season-high 14 rebounds and a block for her 3rd double-double of the season. Junior point guard Keorra Taylor then recorded a season-best total of 7 assists along with 3 steals in the win.

The sister duo of guards Nyesha and Myesha Best also combined for 15 points while junior forwards Myrayna Watkins and Kneciya Tripp combined for 18 rebounds along with 8 total points and 2 Watkins steals.

Wesleyan improves to 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the conference with the win, their best start in the past 10 years. Averett falls to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the USA South.

NCWC is next in action on Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Marietta College in Ohio for the Jim Meagle Holiday Tournament. They will first face off with host Marietta on that Sunday at 5:00 PM.
