Women Cruise Past Mary Baldwin in Second Half

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to their 4th straight conference win by dominating Mary Baldwin Univ. (Va.) for the final three quarters en route to a 89-59 victory on Saturday at home.

Wesleyan outscored the Squirrels 48-27 in the second half including an impressive 22-9 in the third period. After trailing 21-20 after the first quarter, Wesleyan then outscored MBU 21-11 in the second on the way to taking a 41-32 halftime edge as junior guard Cydney Nichols hit a big three to close the half for the Bishops. Wesleyan would ultimately outscore the Squirrels 69-38 after the first frame shooting 35 percent for the game and 80 percent from the free-throw line as they made 14 more free throws than MBU.

Junior forward Myrayna Watkins led all scorers with a season-high of 21 points and 11 rebounds for her 2nd double-double of the year while she also added 3 assists, a steal, and a block in the win. 

Nichols then added 17 points off the bench with 5 rebounds while fellow junior guard Kayla Johnson also added 12 points with 2 assists, a steal, and a block. Junior forward Kneciya Tripp was the final member of the Bishops to score in double-digits posting 10 points with 7 rebounds, a steal, and a block while freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison led with 3 blocks while adding 7 rebounds.

Junior point guard Keorra Taylor also led the team in assists with five and steals with three while freshman guard Myesha Best registered 9 points on a team-best three 3-pointers as well.

Wesleyan improves to 9-3 on the season and 4-0 in the conference while MBU falls to 5-6 overall and 1-3 in the USA South.

The Bishops return to action on Wednesday night when they head to Raleigh to face William Peace University at 6:00 PM.
