Women Edge Meredith in Overtime

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rallied from behind twice to steal a 73-72 overtime victory from Meredith College on the road Saturday afternoon.

Two Kayla Johnson free throws helped tie the game at 60 at the end of regulation to take it to overtime before the Bishops rallied from a 2-point deficit to outscore Meredith 11-5 and take a 73-69 lead in OT before MC added a late three-pointer to make the score closer at the end.

Meredith took a 33-30 halftime lead after holding the Bishops to just 13 points in the second quarter winning the periods 18-17 and 15-13.

However, Wesleyan then held MC to just 9 points and 18 percent shooting in the third quarter as they outscored the Angels 14-9. Wesleyan went on to shoot 33 percent from three and out-rebounded the Angels 51-42.

Johnson, a junior guard, went on to lead the Bishops with 27 points, a new season-high, with 10 made baskets along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.

Fellow guards, junior Cydney Nichols and freshman Nyesha Best were also in double-digit scoring on the day with Nichols finishing with 13 points, a season-best of 3 three-pointers, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, a steal, and a block. Best then had a season-high of 11 points with 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Junior guard Keorra Taylor also led the Bishops with 6 assists along with 4 points and 3 rebounds while fellow junior, forward Myrayna Watkins then added 7 points and a team-high 9 rebounds with an assist, a steal, and a block.

Wesleyan improves to 10-4 overall with a 5-1 record in conference while Meredith falls to 5-11 and 1-6 in conference.

The women are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, on the road at Pfeiffer at 4:00 PM
