Bishop Women Score 111, Crush Salem

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team rolled to a 75-point win on Super Bowl Sunday afternoon as they crushed conference foe Salem College 111-36 in Rocky Mount.

Wesleyan put six women in double-figure points on the day led by 22 points and 10 rebounds for junior forward Myrayna Watkins, her third double-double of the season. Watkins also led in steals with four while adding 3 assists and a block.

The season-high in points saw the Bishops get out to a 15-0 lead and led 27-8 after one quarter. They then only allowed 2 points in the second frame outscoring Salem 22-2 to take a 49-10 halftime lead.

Salem then played well in the third quarter scoring 22 points but allowing 26 to the Bishops as Wesleyan took a 75-32 lead into the fourth. Spanning the 3rd and 4th quarters, Wesleyan actually went on a 29-0 run going from up 65-32 to 94-32 with 4:50 to play.

The Bishops shot over 48 percent for the game and 50 percent from three as they had three women score 20 or more points. Other than Watkins, junior guard Kayla Johnson and senior guard Leah Wright also scored 20 apiece, with the 20 points and four 3-pointers for Wright new career-highs.

Guards Cydney Nichols and Nyesha Best as well as freshman forward Kayrisma Harrison also finished in double-figure scoring. Nichols had 15 along with 5 assists and 2 steals while Best added 12 points with 5 assists, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds as well. Harrison then scored 10 with 6 boards, 2 steals, and a block.

Junior forward Kneciya Tripp then led the team with 13 rebounds along with 5 points and 2 steals before fouling out while junior guard Keorra Taylor led the team with 9 assists as well. Tripp totaled 33 rebounds over the weekend.

The Bishops (8-1 at home) improve to 16-5 on the season equaling their most wins since the 2001-02 campaign while they are now 11-2 in the USA South. Salem falls to 0-20 overall and 0-13 in conference.

Wesleyan returns to action next Saturday when they head to Greensboro College for a 4 PM tip.
