The USA South Athletic Conference has announced its 2019-20 All-Conference awards for women's basketball. Berea College's Aaliyah Hampton was named the Player and Rookie of the Year while William Peace University's Grahm Smith collected Coach of the Year accolades.
NC Wesleyan junior guard Kayla Johnson was named as a First Team All-Conference guard as well as a First Team All-East Division member. Johnson is currently leading the Bishops with 17.3 points/game while shooting over 35% from the three-point arc. She is also averaging 3.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game along with 29 steals and 6 blocks. Johnson has also registered eight 20-point or more games this season so far.
Johnson has helped lead the Battling Bishops to 19 wins and their best season since the 1999 team also won 19 games. The #2 seeded Bishops will next return to action Saturday when they take on #3 seed Maryville College at 3:00 PM right here in Rocky Mount.
Also, the USA South recognized an All-Sportsmanship Team consisting of one member from each competing school. Senior guard Leah Wright was recognized with that honor as well.
All awards are voted on by the women's basketball coach at each institution. The divisional team voting is completed only by those coaches in the particular division. The first team all-conference and individual award voting is completed by all coaches. The awards will be presented to individuals from teams competing in the semifinals of the USA South Women's Basketball tournament immediately following the conclusion of the first semifinal contest.
