Johnson Named Female Athlete of the Year

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College Athletic Department has announced their 2020 Female Athlete of the Year and this year that honor goes to junior guard Kayla Johnson of the Women's Basketball team.

Johnson was named to the First Team All-Division and the First Team All-Conference for her season as she averaged 17.5 points per/game while shooting over 36 percent from three-point range.

She also had nearly 30 steals, 40 assists and 6 blocks on the season as well as making 70 threes and 158 total field goals on the year. The 70 threes were the most in the USA South Conference while she ranked 4th in PPG and total points (437) in the conference as well. She also ranked 6th in the USA South in 3-point percentage (36.3%) as well.

Johnson helped lead the Bishops to their best season in 20 years going 19-6 overall and 14-2 in the conference to finish 2nd in the East Division.

Coach Artina Trader said that Johnson is a "team player, and always encouraging teammates to do well and improve their game."

Johnson was named team MVP this season as well for the second year in a row. 

A native of Annapolis, MD, Johnson is majoring in Criminal Justice.
