Women Open Season with Blowout Win

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team opened their 2020-21 season on Tuesday evening rolling to a 91-48 romp over Mid-Atlantic Christian University (N.C.).

Seniors Myrayna Watkins and Kayla Johnson led the Bishops on the night as they each eclipsed 1,000 career points in the victory. Johnson, a shooting guard, hit the milestone in the first quarter with her 2nd three-pointer of the game while Watkins achieved her 1,000th point in the second quarter. Watkins, a forward, would go on to lead the Bishops in scoring with 14 points as well as rebounds with 15 to notch a double-double while Johnson finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Watkins also had 4 steals and 4 assists on her big night.

Also leading in double-figures in scoring was senior guard Cydney Nichols with 12 points along with sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison, who finished with 10 points and 9 boards and a block. Freshman forward Johnay Goddard also played well off the bench scoring 11 points with 10 rebounds to record a double-double.

The Bishops got off to a terrific start leading 24-10 at the first quarter and again 42-23 at halftime. Wesleyan then played very well defensively in the third quarter outscoring the Lady Mustangs 25-5 before also winning the fourth 24-20. Wesleyan held MACU (2-3) to just 30 percent overall shooting for the game and 18 percent from three while the Bishops shot 45 percent from the floor and converted nine three-pointers.

Senior point guard Keorra Taylor led the way with 4 assists while scoring 8 points with 5 boards and 2 steals as freshman guard Areina Harris also made all three of her threes for 9 points. 

Wesleyan, now 1-0, will next be off until December 7 when they head to Div. I UNC-Greensboro for a 6 PM tip in Fleming Gymnasium.
