Bishop Women Suffer First Loss at D-1 NC Central

DURHAM, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team suffered their first official loss of the season on Monday afternoon falling 87-58 on the road to the Division 1 Eagles of NC Central University. 

The Bishops shot 33 percent from the field in the loss while the Eagles shot 46 percent. Wesleyan held NCCU to just one three-pointer in the game, but could only knock down four of their own as NCCU jumped out to a big first quarter lead at 24-10.

Senior Forward Myrayna Watkins led the Bishops with a season-high of 21 points with sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison adding 10 points, a block, and a team-high of 8 rebounds. Senior guard Cydney Nichols also added 9 points. Watkins would pitch in 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals as well as she played an all-around good game.

Senior shooting guard Kayla Johnson finished with 6 points and 3 assists as well.

After NC Central held a 42-26 halftime lead, the Bishops came out in the third and competed with the Eagles as the back and forth quarter saw each team tally 18 points as Central took the 60-44 lead into the fourth. However, NCCU would press on the gas and put the game away outscoring the Bishops 27-14 in the fourth for the win. NCCU improves to 2-3 on the season.

The women fall to 2-1 on the year and will next be in action on Friday when they go on the road to Virginia to begin conference play at Mary Baldwin University (Va.).
