Bishop Women Start off Conference Season with Win

STAUNTON, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team started off conference season with a 15-point road win 89-74 over Mary Baldwin University (Va.) on Friday evening.

Senior guard Cydney Nichols led the Bishops with 20 points along with 7 rebounds and three 3-pointers while sophomore forward Kayrisma Harrison added 16 points, 2 blocks, and a career-high of 17 rebounds (9 offensive) for a double-double.

Wesleyan led 25-17 after the first quarter and 46-36 at halftime and then only 68-62 after three quarters. However the Bishops then went on a 15-0 run to start the fourth and take an 83-62 lead with 5 minutes to play. Wesleyan ended up shooting over 45 percent for the game  and 38 percent from three while MBU shot just 36 percent overall and only 28 percent from three.

Fellow senior guards Kayla Johnson and Keorra Taylor also played well with Johnson scoring 8 points and Taylor pitching in 14 with 4 assists and 2 steals. Senior forward Myrayna Watkins also added 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and a team-best three steals in the win.

Wesleyan improves to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in USA South play while MBU falls to 0-1. The women will return home on Sunday to host Mary Baldwin again at 2 PM.
