Bishop Women Use Defense to Sweep Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team used stellar defense in the second half to hold Averett to just 16 points and roll to the 69-45 road victory.

The Bishops (10-1) trailed 18-15 after one quarter, but then stepped up their defense to hold the Cougars to just 27 points over the final three quarters. They would outscore Averett 54-27 to grab their 10th win of the season and remain undefeated in conference at 8-0 with their 8th straight win. Wesleyan also outscored Averett (4-6) in the second half 39-16.

Senior forward Myrayna Watkins led the Bishops with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting along with 5 rebounds, a team-best 5 assists and 2 steals. the balanced scoring attack also saw senior guard Cydney Nichols finish in double-figures with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block.

Guards Keorra Taylor and freshman Deonna Adams scored 8 points apiece with Taylor adding 2 assists and 2 steals as well while senior Kayla Johnson led the team with two 3-pointers to total 6 points on the game.

Forwards Kneciya Tripp and Kayrisma Harrison combined for 13 points and 10 rebounds with Harrison also posting two assists and blocking a shot. Fellow forward Javana Jones then led the team with 8 rebounds and 3 steals while scoring 5 points as well.

The Bishop women will return to action on Friday when they come home to host Methodist at 6:00 PM.
