Wesleyan Women's Comeback Falls Short in loss to Mary Washington

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team fell short in their comeback bid on Sunday afternoon falling 78-72 in a neutral site matchup with the University of Mary Washington (Va.) at the VA Wesleyan tournament.

After a first quarter thar saw both teams score 13 points apiece, UMW then dominated the second quarter outscoring the Bishops 26-12 to go into the halftime break up 39-25 on NCWC.

Wesleyan then controlled the third quarter winning it slightly 19-17 to trail 56-44 heading into the start of the fourth. The Bishops then continued their rally in the fourth, which carried over from the third when Wesleyan was down 56-38. NCW then went on a 31-13 run to tie the Eagles at 69 apiece with a Myesha Best three-pointer with 3:41 to play.

However, after a UMW timeout, the Lady Eagles would come out of it and control the final stretch of the game outscoring the Bishops 9-3 to close out Wesleyan and pick up the win. UMW remains undefeated improving to 5-0 while Wesleyan falls to 2-4 with their tough-luck loss. 

Junior guard Myesha Best led the Bishops with a career high of 20 points on 6 of 11 shooting and shooting a career-best 4 of 7 from three (57%) along with 2 steals. Her sister, junior guard Nyesha Best, then led the team with 5 assists while sophomore guard Areina Harris came off the bench to score her career best of 14 points with 4 three-pointers and 3 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons also had a nice game finishing with a season-high of 12 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Fellow forward, junior Kayrisma Harrison posted 11 points and 10 rebounds with a team-high 4 steals for her 3rd double-double while also being named to the All-Tournament team.

Wesleyan will next return to action on Tuesday when they head to Salem College for their conference opener at 6 PM.
