#5 CNU Pushes Past Bishop Women

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team fell 82-58 to 5th ranked and undefeated Christopher Newport University at home on Wednesday afternoon in the final game of 2021.

The Bishop women fall to 4-7 overall and will next return to action on January 4 at 3 PM to host Salem College. CNU improves to 11-0 on the season.

Wesleyan was led by 10 points from senior guard Kayla Johnson while junior forward Kayrisma Harrison led with 9 rebounds and 9 points along with 3 steals and 3 blocks.

A low-scoring first quarter saw CNU get out to an 18-10 lead before they poured it on in the second going on a 30-10 run to lead 48-20 at the break. The Bishops struggled to shoot the ball in the first half going just 22 percent from the floor, but improved greatly in the second half shooting nearly 40 percent. Wesleyan then shot 50 percent in the fourth quarter also.

The second half saw much better play from the Bishops as they stayed right with the powerful Captains going down just 18-16 in the third before outscoring them 22-16 in the fourth.

Also playing well for the Bishops was sophomore guard Deonna Adams with 8 points, a season-high 6 steals, 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a block while senior point guard Keorra Taylor also scored 7 points with 3 rebounds and 2 assists. Senior forward Javana Jones then grabbed 9 rebounds off the bench with 2 assists and 2 blocks while sophomore guards Areina Harris and Nyesha Best each scored 7 points apiece. They combined for 5 assists as well.

CNU shot 48 percent from the floor overall while holding Wesleyan to 32 percent shooting.
