Wesleyan Women Cruise Past Meredith

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team cruised to an easy 73-53 win over conference foe Meredith College on Wednesday night after running out to a big first half lead.

The Bishops got out to a sizable 19-2 lead before taking a 26-4 lead into the second quarter. Wesleyan also outscored the Angels 18-10 in the second quarter to grab a massive 44-12 lead at the halftime break.

A back and forth third quarter saw the two foes tied at 17 before Meredith used a late run to control the fourth, but Wesleyan powered through for the 20-point win. 

The Bishops shot 44 percent overall for the game and an impressive 46 percent from three including senior Kayla Johnson going 4 for 5 from behind the arc for 22 points on the night. Johnson shot 8 of 13 overall with 2 assists and 2 steals. Wesleyan then held the Angels to just 12 percent from three and 41 percent overall.

Also playing well for the Bishops was junior forward Kayrisma Harrison with another double double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore guard Areina Harris was the other member of the Bishops to finish in double digit scoring with 11 points while sophomore forward Nadia Simmons led the team with 5 steals along with 5 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.

Senior point guard Keorra Taylor also led the Bishops with a team high of 6 assists while senior forward Javana Jones scored 8 points with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and a block as well.

The Bishops improve to 6-7 overall and 4-2 in the conference with the win while dropping Meredith to 2-11 and 2-5 in the USA South.

Wesleyan returns to action on Friday when they head north to battle Southern Virginia at 5 PM.
