Wesleyan Women Hang On to Oust Averett 62-60; Johnson Breaks School Record

DANVILLE, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team held on for a 62-60 conference win over rival Averett University on the road Wednesday evening.

With the win, the Bishops improve to 7-7 overall with their 3rd straight win and 5-2 in the conference.

Senior guard Kayla Johnson led the team with 20 points on the night and broke the school's career three-point record, held by Shannon Stobel, in the process by securing her 208th three-point field goal of her career in the first quarter. Johnson made four threes on the night as she now sits alone in first with 211 threes. She also added 4 assists and a steal on the night.

A low-scoring first quarter saw the Cougars lead just 13-11 before Wesleyan dominated the second winning it 18-10 to lead 29-23 at the break. Averett would then tie the game at 40 at the end of three quarters before the Bishops would take the fourth 22-20 for the win as Johnson secured the victory making her fourth three of the night with 21 seconds to go to put Wesleyan up five. 

Also registering double-digit points were sophomore guard Deonna Adams scoring 12 on the night on 50 percent shooting along with 4 assists and 2 steals while junior forward Kayrisma Harrison also tallied 12 points as well along with 11 rebounds and a block for another double-double, her 8th of the season. 

Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons recorded 7 points and 9 rebounds as well while junior guard Nyesha Best scored 8 points. Sophomore guard Areina Harris also led the team with a season-high 5 steals.

The women return to action on Saturday when they come home to host Pfeiffer at 2:00 PM.
