Women Hold Off Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team held off a comeback bid by conference foe Meredith College 66-59 to pick up their ninth win of the season on the road Wednesday night.

Senior guard Kayla Johnson led the Bishops on the night scoring a season-high of 23 points on 5 of 8 shooting from behind the arc to extend her career three-point mark. Fellow guard, sophomore Areina Harris also finished in double-figure scoring putting up 12 points off the bench.

With the win, Wesleyan climbs back over .500 to 9-8 overall and 7-3 in the East Division of the USA South.

The Bishops held a slim 16-14 lead after the first quarter before dominating the second quarter by a tune of 24-10 to take a 40-24 halftime edge. However, the Angels then made a rally in the third quarter going on a 17-9 run to trim Wesleyan's lead down to 8 points at 41-49. 

MC (2-15) would then get to within two points in the fourth at 52-54 but the Bishops would go on a game-ending 12-7 run to clinch the 7-point win. Wesleyan shot just 34 percent for the game but made five more threes and 8 more free throws than the Angels, who shot 42 percent overall.

Senior point guard Keorra Taylor led the Bishops in assists with six while also scoring 8 points and grabbing two steals while senior forward Javana Jones led the team with 10 rebounds along with 2 assists, and a block. Junior forward Kayrisma Harrison also had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Wesleyan will next be in action on friday when they travel northwest to battle conference leader Southern Virginia for a 5:00 tip before returning home on Saturday to host Mary Baldwin at 2:00 PM.
