Bishops Use Late Free Throws to Edge Mary Baldwin

STAUNTON, Va. - The NC Wesleyan College women's basketball team made four late free throws in the final minute of play to hold off Mary Baldwin 60-58 on the road Tuesday night.

Junior forward Kayrisma Harrison led the women to the win by posting another double-double of a team-best 17 points and 14 rebounds along with 2 blocks and 2 steals. Wesleyan improves to 13-10 with the win and 11-5 in the East Division remaining in third place.

A low-scoring first quarter saw the Bishops lead by just three at 14-11. Wesleyan then dominated the second quarter taking it 17-9 to lead 31-20 at the break. After the Bishops got up by 14 at 40-26 midway through the third, MBU (11-8, 8-7) then went on a 15-0 run to end the quarter and lead 41-40 heading into the fourth.

The fourth quarter would then remain very close throughout with neither team leading by more than 4 points. With the Bishops down four with under four minutes to play, they would then go on a 14-8 run to end the game on a Kayla Johnson three, and four go-ahead free throws from Harrison and sophomore guard Deonna Adams. Adams wouild go on to finish with 7 points and 4 rebounds.

Senior point guard Keorra Taylor led the team with four assists along with 8 points, 4 boards, 2 steals, and a block while fellow guard, junior Myesha Best tallied 8 points and 2 steals off the bench. Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons also scored 8 points while Johnay Goddard grabbed 5 boards and scored 4 points off the bench.

Wesleyan next travels to rival William Peace to battle the Pacers on Friday evening at 6 PM.
