Bishop Women Use Offense to Roll Past Averett

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The NC Wesleyan College women's hoops team rolled to a big 87-65 conference win over Averett University (Va.) in their home finale on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves the Bishops to 15-10 on the season and 13-5 in the conference as they won their 4th straight game. The women have clinched the third seed in the upcoming conference tournament and will now await the final conference standings to see who and where they play next weekend.

A competitive first quarter saw the Bishops lead by just two at 21-19. Wesleyan then poured on the points in the second quarter shooting 61 percent and 71 percent from three (5 of 7) to take the quarter 29-15 to lead 50-34 at the break.

Wesleyan then kept up the high-quality shooting in the 3rd quarter winning it 22-15 to lead 72-49 going into the fourth. A competitive fourth quarter was too little too late for the Cougars as they would go on to fall to the Bishops by 22 dropping to 6-18 overall and 6-11 in the Division.

The guard tandem of senior Kayla Johnson and junior Myesha Best went on to each score 14 points apiece while combining to shoot 7 of 13 from the three-point area. Johnson made four htrees while Best knocked down three.

Also scoring in double-figures was senior forward Javana Jones and junior guard Nyesha Best off the bench. Jones finished with 12 points, 5 rebounds, and a steal while Best scored 11 with 5 assists and 2 steals. Sophomore guard Areina Harris also scored 8 points off the bench while fellow guard, senior Keorra Taylor then scored 7 points and led the team with 6 assists and 4 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Nadia Simmons added 7 points as well as the Bishops shot 46 percent for the game overall and 52 percent from three (11 of 21) for a season-high.
