Bishops Victorious in Conference Opener

Raleigh, NC – The North Carolina Wesleyan women's basketball team beat Meredith College 64-46 in their conference opener on the road Tuesday night.  The women improve to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in conference play while dropping Meredith to 0-1.

The Bishops used a big second quarter run to take command of the game. After leading by just five heading into the second at 19-14, the Bishops went on a 20-9 stretch to take a 39-23 halftime edge on 45 percent shooting.  Wesleyan would only outscore the Angels 25-23 in the second half, but shot 76% from the free-throw line to put the game away.

Junior forward Johnay Goddard (Williamston, NC/Riverside) led the Bishops with 15 points and 8 rebounds along with 3 steals. Fellow forward, sophomore Corynthian Williams (Williamsburg, VA/Jamestown) then added 10 points and 3 rebounds while point guard Nyesha Best (Goldsboro, NC/Eastern Wayne) had 9 points.

Freshman forward Kaniya Cromartie (Smithfield, VA/Smithfield) led the team with 3 assists to go along with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Nadia Simmons (Henderson, NC/Vance Charter) and Destiney Bell (Chespeake, VA/Deep Creek) had 8 and 7 points respectively.
