Bishops Fall to #25 Mary Washington

Rocky Mount, NC – The North Carolina Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team hosted #25 Eagles of Mary Washington tonight despite falling short with a final score of 72 to 58.

The Battling Bishops jumped out to gain an early lead in the first quarter going on a 5-0 run with Areina Harris as a huge contributor totaling 5 points in the first few minutes of the game. The Bishops scored a total of 15 points to finish out the first quarter on top.

The Battling Bishops continued in the lead during the second quarter by shooting 27% from the floor and shooting 83% from the foul line. The Bishops would take a 26 to 24 lead going into halftime, not once trailing the #25 Eagles of Mary Washington. Bishops' Harris continued contributions in scoring, totaling 6 points in the 2nd quarter, pushed the Bishops past the Eagles to go into halftime. 

The Eagles began the 3rd quarter on a 6-0 run to tie the ball game at 28 - 28. Both teams would battle back and forth in a closely played 3rd quarter with the Squirrels going on another 7-0 run to end the quarter leading 47-39.

The Bishops would continue to play hard while closing the gap to a mere 4 points in the 4th quarter with 5:34 left in play, with a score of 53-49. Eagles' Riner netted 5 points to sell a 7-0 run for the Eagles with only minutes left to play. Within the final two minutes, the Bishops found themselves unable to gain the lead after Mary Washington went 6-6 in free throws and ultimately falling to the #25 Eagles of Mary Washington, 72 to 58. 

Areina Harris, the junior from Raleigh, NC, led the Bishop ladies in scoring with a total of 14 points (11 of those points in the first half of play); shooting 6 of 8 from the floor and 2 of 4 from behind the arc. Following her lead was Bishops'Johnay Goddard, the junior from Williamston, NC, scoring 12 points while shooting 5 of 10 from the floor. Bishops' Nadia Simmons, the junior from Henderson, NC, scored 10 points, shooting 4 of 6 from the floor and 2 of 2 from the free throw line. The Bishop's defense was led by Kayrisma Harrison, the senior from Weldon, NC, with 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 3 blocks.
